Loyola Vikasa Kendra (LVK), Mundgod – Hanagal

Loyola Vikasa Kendra (LVK), Mundgod – Hanagal is the social action and rural development wing of the Jesuit mission in North Karnataka, dedicated to the empowerment of marginalized communities through education, social awareness, women’s empowerment, livelihood initiatives, and sustainable rural development. Managed by the North Karnataka Jesuit Educational and Charitable Society (NKJE&CS) under the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), founded by St. Ignatius of Loyola in 1540, LVK continues the Jesuit mission of promoting justice, dignity, and holistic human development among the poor and vulnerable.

The history of the Jesuit mission in Mundgod began in 1982, when the Karnataka Jesuit Province extended its educational and social outreach to North Karnataka by identifying Mundgod Taluk in Uttara Kannada district as a mission centre for serving marginalized rural communities. The region was then considered one of the most educationally and economically backward areas of Karnataka, inhabited largely by communities such as the Siddi, Gawli, Golla, Vaddar, Lamani, Koravar, and other socially disadvantaged groups.

The Jesuits initially focused on village outreach, literacy, social awareness, and community empowerment. As they worked closely with rural communities, they recognized the urgent need for both formal education and organized rural development initiatives. This led to the establishment of several Loyola educational institutions in Mundgod, beginning with Loyola Primary School in 1991, followed by Loyola High School in 1995, Loyola PU College in 2003, and later Loyola Kendriya Vidyalaya (CBSE) in 2014.

Within this broader Jesuit mission, Loyola Vikasa Kendra (LVK) was formally established in 1984 as the social action wing of the North Karnataka Jesuit mission. The institution was founded with the vision of promoting the integral development of rural communities through educational, social, economic, and empowerment programmes. Over the years, LVK expanded its activities from Mundgod to Hanagal in Haveri district, creating a two-centre rural development network serving nearly 80 villages.

Historically, LVK became known for its people-centred and participatory approach to development. The institution focused particularly on the empowerment of women, youth, Dalits, tribal communities, and economically weaker rural families through grassroots-level organization and awareness programmes.

Over the years, LVK has implemented a wide range of initiatives including:

  • Women Self-Help Groups (SHGs)
  • Livelihood and income-generation programmes
  • Youth leadership and skill-development initiatives
  • Educational support and literacy programmes
  • Health and hygiene awareness campaigns
  • Sustainable agriculture and environmental initiatives
  • Child rights and women empowerment programmes
  • Village-level social awareness and capacity-building activities

The institution has also become an important centre for rural immersion and social exposure programmes for students from Jesuit institutions across Karnataka. Students from institutions such as AIMIT, Mangaluru regularly participate in village immersion programmes organized by LVK in Mundgod and Hangal to understand rural realities, livelihoods, and grassroots social challenges.

Rooted in the Jesuit philosophy of “faith that does justice,” Loyola Vikasa Kendra believes in empowering communities to become active participants in their own development. Guided by the Jesuit ideal of walking with the poor and marginalized, LVK promotes:

  • Human dignity and social justice
  • Community empowerment and participation
  • Education and social awareness
  • Women and youth leadership
  • Sustainable development and environmental care
  • Equality, inclusion, and self-reliance

Through dedicated Jesuit leadership, committed social workers, and active community participation, LVK has played a transformative role in the social and educational development of rural communities in North Karnataka for nearly four decades.

Today, Loyola Vikasa Kendra (LVK), Mundgod – Hanagal stands as a vibrant centre of Jesuit social action and rural empowerment, carrying forward the enduring Jesuit legacy of compassion, justice, education, and transformative service to society.
