St. Anne’s Church, Bijapur

St. Anne’s Church, Bijapur, traces its origins to a small chapel built in 1891 to serve the pastoral needs of a small Catholic community. At that time, the priest in charge of Guledgud also attended to the faithful in Bijapur. As the number of parishioners gradually increased, the chapel became inadequate for the growing congregation.

Recognizing this need, Fr. De Niese, then priest in charge of Bijapur, approached the Bishop for permission to construct a larger church. With financial assistance from benefactors abroad and contributions from local parishioners, a new church was built. It was solemnly blessed and inaugurated on 22 December 1983 by Ignatius Lobo.

In 1991, the Bishop of the Diocese of Belgaum entrusted the pastoral care of St. Anne’s Church, Bijapur, to the Jesuits of the Karnataka Province. The pioneering Jesuits who initiated this mission were Ambrose D’Mello and Denis Alvares.

Following the establishment of the Diocese of Gulbarga in 2005, Bijapur was constituted as a Deanery, with the Mission Superior serving as the Dean. The Deanery includes the mission stations of Bijapur, Devarahipparagi, Indi, Kanakal, Sindagi, Almel, Muddebihal, and Talikote.

Nine religious congregations, along with a diocesan priest, serve across the Deanery: the Society of Jesus (SJ), Sisters of Charity (SCCG), Sisters of St. Joseph of Cluny (SJC), Sisters of St. Joseph of Tarbes (SJT), Daughters of the Heart of Mary (DHM), Sisters of Jesus, Mary and Joseph (JMJ), Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions (RNDM), Ursuline Franciscan Sisters (UFS), and Sisters of St. Joseph of Lyons (SJL). While each congregation carries out its mission in its respective area, there is a shared commitment to collaboration through a common vision, coordinated pastoral strategies, and joint action.

In recent years, the parish has witnessed steady growth due to the arrival of migrant families, as well as an increase in students and healthcare professionals. The structural deterioration and leakage in the old building, led to its demolition and a new church is constructed, symbolizing the vibrant and growing faith community of St. Anne’s, Bijapur.
