Publications by the Jesuits of Karnataka
The Publication Ministry of the Karnataka Jesuits is an important apostolic initiative dedicated to promoting education, spirituality, history, culture, social awareness, and intellectual engagement through books, journals, research works, and literary contributions. Rooted in the Jesuit tradition of scholarship and communication, the ministry seeks to preserve history, promote dialogue, and contribute meaningfully to society through the written word.
The history of Jesuit publications in Karnataka is closely connected to the arrival of Jesuit missionaries in the region in 1878, when the Jesuits began their educational, pastoral, and cultural mission in Mangaluru and later across Karnataka. From the beginning, Jesuits recognized literature and publications as powerful tools for education, faith formation, social awareness, and cultural preservation.
Historically, Jesuit missionaries in Karnataka contributed significantly to the development of regional languages, education, and Christian literature, particularly in Kannada, Konkani, and English. Over the decades, Jesuit scholars, historians, scientists, and writers produced important works in spirituality, theology, history, literature, social sciences, and interreligious dialogue.
One of the major historical contributions of the Karnataka Jesuits has been the preservation and documentation of Jesuit history and missionary heritage. A landmark contribution in this field is “The Burning Bush”, authored by Fr. Devadatta Kamath SJ, which documents the history of the Karnataka Jesuit Province from 1878 to 1955. Published in 2006, the work remains an important historical record of Jesuit educational, social, and missionary activities in Karnataka.
Over the years, Karnataka Jesuits have published several important books and biographical works including:
- The Burning Bush
- A Prophecy That Became History
- Down the Memory Lane
- Silent Steps
- Among the Outcasts
- Walk to Freedom
- A Still Small Voice
These works document the lives of pioneering Jesuits, missionary history, educational institutions, and the social transformation brought about through Jesuit ministries in Karnataka.
The publication ministry also promotes:
- Spiritual and theological writings
- Kannada and Konkani literary works
- Educational and catechetical publications
- Historical research and archival documentation
- Interfaith and social harmony literature
- Scientific and academic publications
Jesuit scholars from Karnataka have also contributed significantly in the fields of science and research. Notably, Fr. Leo D’Souza SJ, an internationally known botanist from St. Aloysius institutions, published several scientific works and research contributions in applied biology and plant sciences.
Today, the Publication Ministry of the Karnataka Jesuits continues to serve as a platform for intellectual engagement, cultural preservation, research, and faith-based reflection. Through books, journals, archives, and scholarly publications, the ministry carries forward the enduring Jesuit legacy of education, scholarship, dialogue, and service to society.
