Media Education – St. Aloysius Deemed to be University, Mangaluru

Media Education at St. Aloysius Deemed to be University, Mangaluru is a vibrant Jesuit academic initiative committed to forming creative, ethical, socially conscious, and professionally competent media practitioners. Rooted in the Jesuit tradition of holistic education, the programme integrates communication theory, media practice, critical thinking, research, and social responsibility to prepare students for meaningful engagement with contemporary media and society.

The history of St. Aloysius institutions dates back to 1880, when Jesuit missionaries established St. Aloysius College on the historic Light House Hill in Mangaluru. The institution was founded with the vision of providing quality higher education rooted in faith, discipline, excellence, and service to society. Over the decades, St. Aloysius grew into one of the most respected centres of Jesuit education in South India.

Historically, the Jesuits have recognized communication and media as powerful tools for education, cultural engagement, social awareness, and nation-building. Inspired by this vision, St. Aloysius gradually expanded into the field of media and communication studies to address the growing influence of journalism, cinema, digital media, advertising, and visual storytelling in modern society.

The institution formally strengthened its media education initiatives through the establishment of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, which later evolved into the Department of Media Studies under St. Aloysius Deemed to be University. The department emerged as an important centre for media education in Coastal Karnataka, offering programmes that combine theoretical understanding with practical training and creative expression.

Historically, the Department of Media Studies became known for its learner-centred and industry-oriented approach. The department introduced programmes such as:

  • BA Media and Communication
  • BSc Visual Communication
  • MA Media and Communication

These programmes were designed to prepare students for careers in journalism, filmmaking, digital media, broadcasting, advertising, photography, public relations, multimedia production, and corporate communication.

Over the years, Media Education at St. Aloysius has steadily expanded its infrastructure and academic reach. The department developed modern media laboratories, audio-visual production facilities, editing studios, photography labs, and digital learning spaces to support hands-on training and experiential learning.

A significant historical aspect of the department has been its emphasis on practical exposure and professional engagement. Students have actively participated in:

  • Documentary filmmaking
  • Campus journalism and publications
  • Media production projects
  • National-level media fests and workshops
  • Photography and visual storytelling initiatives
  • Media research and social awareness campaigns
  • Internships with print, television, digital, and corporate media organizations

The department has also built collaborations and Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with media organizations and creative institutions to strengthen industry exposure and skill development among students. Historically, such collaborations helped the department bridge the gap between classroom learning and professional media practice.

The transformation of St. Aloysius College into St. Aloysius Deemed to be University in 2024 marked a historic milestone in the growth of media education at the institution. The conferment of university status opened new opportunities for interdisciplinary learning, research, innovation, and international academic collaborations in communication and media studies.

Rooted in the Jesuit philosophy of forming “men and women for and with others,” Media Education at St. Aloysius seeks to nurture professionals who are not only technically skilled but also ethically grounded, critically aware, and socially responsible.

The programme promotes:

  • Creative communication and storytelling
  • Critical thinking and media literacy
  • Ethical journalism and responsible communication
  • Social awareness and inclusiveness
  • Professional excellence and innovation
  • Environmental sensitivity and human dignity

Over the years, graduates of the department have gone on to contribute significantly in journalism, cinema, television, digital media, advertising, public relations, academia, and creative industries across India and abroad.

Today, Media Education at St. Aloysius Deemed to be University, Mangaluru continues to carry forward the rich Jesuit legacy of education, ethics, creativity, and transformative social engagement while shaping future media professionals committed to truth, justice, and responsible communication in an evolving global media landscape.
