St. Joseph’s College of Commerce, Bengaluru
St. Joseph’s College of Commerce (SJCC), Bengaluru is one of India’s premier institutions for commerce and management education, renowned for its rich Jesuit heritage, academic excellence, and commitment to holistic formation. Managed by the Bangalore Jesuit Educational Society (BJES) under the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), founded by St. Ignatius of Loyola in 1540, the institution continues a distinguished tradition of forming intellectually competent, socially responsible, and ethically grounded leaders.
The roots of the institution trace back to 1882, when St. Joseph’s College was established in Bengaluru by the French Foreign Mission Fathers with the vision of providing quality higher education rooted in faith, discipline, and service. In 1937, the administration of the institution was entrusted to the Jesuit Fathers, who expanded and strengthened the Josephite educational mission in Karnataka.
The history of commerce education at St. Joseph’s began in 1949, when the Department of Commerce was established within the parent institution. As commerce and management education gained prominence, the department steadily grew in academic reputation and student strength. In 1972, the department became an independent institution under the name St. Joseph’s College of Commerce, with its own campus on Brigade Road in the heart of Bengaluru.
From its inception, SJCC distinguished itself through academic innovation, discipline, and student-centred learning. Historically, the college has been among the pioneers in commerce education in Karnataka, introducing industry-oriented programmes and modern teaching methodologies that responded to changing business and economic environments.
A major milestone in the institution’s journey came in 2005, when the University Grants Commission (UGC) granted autonomous status to the college. This enabled SJCC to design innovative curricula, reform examination systems, and introduce interdisciplinary and professional programmes tailored to contemporary industry needs.
Over the years, the institution has achieved significant academic recognition. SJCC was declared a “College with Potential for Excellence” by the UGC in 2010, and in 2011, it was recognized as a Research Centre by Bengaluru City University. The college has also consistently performed exceptionally in NAAC accreditation cycles, earning an A++ Grade in its fourth accreditation cycle in 2021.
Rooted in the Jesuit philosophy of education, the institution is guided by its motto “Fide et Labore” (Faith and Toil), emphasizing integrity, excellence, hard work, and service to society. The college believes in the formation of the whole person and promotes
- Academic excellence and intellectual inquiry
- Leadership and ethical responsibility
- Critical thinking and innovation
- Social justice and inclusiveness
- Entrepreneurship and professional competence
- Compassion, service, and human dignity
Today, SJCC offers a wide range of undergraduate, postgraduate, professional, and research programmes in Commerce, Business Administration, Economics, and allied disciplines. The institution integrates academics with research, internships, cultural activities, social outreach programmes, leadership initiatives, and global collaborations to ensure the holistic development of students.
Over the decades, St. Joseph’s College of Commerce has produced thousands of accomplished alumni who have excelled in business, finance, entrepreneurship, academia, civil services, media, and leadership roles across India and around the world.
With its vibrant academic culture, dedicated faculty, and commitment to excellence and social transformation, St. Joseph’s College of Commerce, Bengaluru continues to carry forward the rich Josephite and Jesuit legacy of shaping future generations into competent professionals and compassionate citizens committed to building a just and humane society.
