St. Peter’s Church, Jagir Pannur
The mission station of Jagir Pannur was bifurcated from the Manvi Parish in 1994, with Fr. Augustine P. R. appointed as its first Parish Priest. During his tenure, he undertook the renovation of both the presbytery and the church, laying a strong foundation for the growth of the mission.
The Jesuits assumed responsibility for the mission in 2002 and have since been actively involved in pastoral, social, and educational ministries. A boarding house was established for village children, providing them with opportunities for education and care. The Jesuits also initiated several Self-Help Groups for women, promoting empowerment and sustainable livelihoods within the local communities.
To address the healthcare needs of the region, a Medical Centre was opened to serve nearly 38 remote villages. In collaboration with their NGO, the Centre for Non-Formal and Continuing Education, the Jesuits undertook extensive rehabilitation work by constructing around 300 houses for flood-affected families across various villages. They have also remained committed to the education and upliftment of Dalit children from surrounding villages.
The Sisters of St. Joseph of Tarbes were invited to administer the Medical Centre at Pannur, strengthening the mission’s outreach in healthcare and compassionate service. Following the agreement between the Diocese and the Karnataka Jesuit Province in June 2005, the Jesuits intensified their evangelization ministry in the region.
In 2012, a non-formal school was started in a modest shed to cater to the educational needs of local children. The mission witnessed further growth with the blessing of a newly constructed large church by Bishop Henry D’Souza of Bellary on 19 January 2013. Later, the Loyola Kapepalady School building was blessed by Bishop Henry D’Souza on 12 December 2015.
The new presbytery was inaugurated by the Karnataka Jesuit Provincial, Fr. Stanislaus D’Souza SJ, and blessed by Bishop Henry on 25 April 2016. Today, the parish continues its vibrant ministry through its two substations: Hulgunchi and Yaddala Doddi.
