Managed by the Bangalore Jesuit Educational Society (BJES) under the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), founded by St. Ignatius of Loyola in 1540, the University continues a distinguished tradition of forming intellectually competent, socially committed, and ethically grounded citizens.
The history of the institution dates back to 1882, when St. Joseph’s College was established in Bengaluru by the Paris Foreign Mission Fathers with the vision of providing quality higher education rooted in faith, discipline, and service. Historically, St. Joseph’s College was among the pioneering institutions in Bengaluru to introduce modern higher education in the sciences, humanities, commerce, and social sciences. A major milestone in the institution’s journey came in 2005, when St. Joseph’s College became one of the first colleges in Karnataka to receive autonomous status, enabling it to introduce innovative and interdisciplinary academic programmes.
