St. Joseph’s Institute of Management (SJIM), Bengaluru
St. Joseph’s Institute of Management (SJIM), Bengaluru is a premier Jesuit business school dedicated to excellence in management education, ethical leadership, and social responsibility. Managed by the Bangalore Jesuit Educational Society (BJES) under the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), founded by St. Ignatius of Loyola in 1540, the institution continues the Jesuit tradition of forming competent, value-driven, and socially conscious leaders.
Located in the heart of Bengaluru on Lalbagh Road, SJIM was established in 1968 as part of the renowned St. Joseph’s educational mission. The institute was founded with the vision of providing professional management education rooted in ethics, leadership, and service to society at a time when management education in India was still in its formative years.
The history of SJIM is deeply connected to the long and distinguished Josephite educational tradition that began in 1882 with the establishment of St. Joseph’s College by the Paris Foreign Mission Fathers in Bengaluru. In 1937, the administration of the St. Joseph’s Institutions was entrusted to the Jesuit Fathers, who expanded the mission of education and social transformation across Karnataka. Inspired by this rich legacy, SJIM emerged as one of the pioneering Jesuit management institutions in South India.
Initially established as the Management Department of St. Joseph’s College of Commerce, the institute later evolved into an independent management institution offering specialized postgraduate programmes in business administration and leadership development. Over the decades, SJIM has steadily built a reputation for academic excellence, industry engagement, ethical management education, and holistic student formation.
Historically, SJIM was among the early business schools in Bengaluru to emphasize value-based management education by integrating business competence with ethics, social awareness, and responsible leadership. The institution became known for its learner-centred pedagogy, industry-oriented curriculum, and strong focus on leadership formation grounded in Jesuit values.
The institute received approval from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and introduced its flagship Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) programme, which later earned recognition and accreditation for academic quality and industry relevance. SJIM also developed strong collaborations with industries, corporate organizations, research bodies, and international academic institutions, further strengthening its position as a respected management institute.
Rooted in the Jesuit philosophy of education, SJIM believes in the formation of the whole person — intellectually competent, emotionally balanced, ethically grounded, spiritually aware, and socially responsible. Guided by the Jesuit ideal of forming “men and women for and with others,” the institution promotes:
- Academic excellence and professional competence
- Ethical leadership and integrity
- Critical thinking and innovation
- Entrepreneurship and social responsibility
- Sustainability and environmental consciousness
- Compassion, service, and commitment to the common good
The institute offers management programmes that integrate academics with experiential learning, leadership development, research, internships, corporate interaction, rural immersion programmes, and social outreach initiatives. Students are encouraged to become reflective leaders capable of making ethical and socially responsible decisions in a rapidly changing global environment.
Over the years, SJIM has produced thousands of successful alumni who have excelled in corporate leadership, entrepreneurship, public service, academia, social development, and global business sectors across India and abroad.
Today, St. Joseph’s Institute of Management, Bengaluru stands as a vibrant centre of Jesuit management education, carrying forward the rich Josephite legacy of excellence, leadership, and social transformation while shaping future business leaders committed to building a just, ethical, and sustainable world.
