St. Rita’s Parish, Mundgod
Located amidst the forest region of northern Karnataka, Mundgod is a small town that became a significant centre of Jesuit pastoral and social outreach. In 1980, at the invitation of Bishop William D’Mello of Karwar, Fr. Mathew Lewis, SJ, was appointed Parish Priest of St. Rita’s Church, Mundgod. He began his mission with a small Catholic community, dedicating himself to the spiritual and social upliftment of the people in the region.
Recognising the need for education among the tribal and marginalised communities, Fr. Mathew Lewis, in collaboration with the Sisters of Charity, started a school in 1991 within the church premises. The school primarily serves tribal communities such as the Siddhis, Gollas, and Gowli communities, along with Dalit families living in remote forest villages.
Fr. Mathew also oversaw the construction of a new church building in Mundgod. The old church was transformed into a library and reading room, creating a welcoming space for learning and community interaction for people of all faiths.
Today, St. Rita’s Parish continues its mission of socio-pastoral development through its three substations: Mainahalli, Ugginkere, and Malagi. The Catholic communities in Mainahalli and Ugginkere are predominantly Siddhis, descendants of Africans brought to Goa during the Portuguese era, who continue to preserve their unique cultural identity and heritage.
The parish remains committed to the holistic development of the people through pastoral care, education, social outreach, and community empowerment. St. Lawrence Church, Hangal, also functions under the supervision of the Mundgod Mission, extending the Jesuit presence and service in the region.
