Youth Ministry – Karnataka Jesuits

The Youth Ministry of the Karnataka Jesuits is a vibrant apostolic mission dedicated to accompanying young people in their journey towards personal growth, leadership, social responsibility, and spiritual formation. Rooted in the vision of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), founded by St. Ignatius of Loyola in 1540, the ministry seeks to form young men and women who are intellectually competent, emotionally mature, spiritually grounded, and committed to building a just and humane society.

The history of the Jesuit presence in Karnataka dates back to 1878, when Jesuit missionaries arrived in Mangaluru to begin educational and pastoral work in the region. From the very beginning, Jesuits actively engaged with young people through schools, colleges, youth associations, leadership programmes, and faith formation initiatives.

Historically, youth apostolate has always been an integral part of the Karnataka Jesuit mission. Jesuits accompanied students and young people through organizations such as:

  • AICUF (All India Catholic University Federation)
  • Christian Life Communities (CLC)
  • Youth clubs and campus movements
  • Leadership and social awareness programmes

These initiatives focused on helping youth understand social realities, develop critical thinking, and respond to society with compassion, responsibility, and Gospel values.

A major milestone in the history of Jesuit youth ministry in Karnataka came in 2009, when the Karnataka Jesuit Province formally strengthened its youth apostolate by appointing Fr. Brian Pereira SJ as the full-time Youth Coordinator and establishing a dedicated Youth Centre in Bengaluru. This marked the beginning of a more organized and structured youth ministry across Karnataka.

Over the years, the ministry expanded significantly and came under the banner of KJES Youth Works (Karnataka Jesuit Educational Society Youth Works), which today coordinates youth initiatives across Bengaluru, Coastal Karnataka, and North Karnataka.

In 2015, the Karnataka Jesuits further expanded youth outreach in North Karnataka by establishing a dedicated Youth Centre at Vidya Niketan, Dharwad, enabling the ministry to accompany rural and unorganized youth from villages and mission areas.

Historically, the Karnataka Jesuit Youth Ministry has developed several impactful programmes and movements including:

  • IGNITORS – Integral formation programmes for college students
  • YUVA (Youth United for Values and Attitudes)
  • MAG+S (MAGIS)
  • NECCB – Accompaniment of migrant and North-East youth in Bengaluru
  • Youth Faith Development (YFD) programmes
  • Rural immersion and social exposure initiatives

One of the notable historical developments was the growth of MAG+S, which evolved into a major Ignatian Youth Movement in South Asia, bringing together thousands of youth for faith formation, leadership development, and social engagement.

The ministry has consistently emphasized:

  • Integral formation of youth
  • Leadership development
  • Social awareness and constitutional values
  • Interfaith harmony and inclusiveness
  • Service-learning and rural exposure
  • Environmental responsibility and sustainability
  • Mental health and youth accompaniment

Over the years, Karnataka Jesuit Youth Ministry has reached thousands of organized and unorganized youth across schools, colleges, villages, slums, and mission centres. The ministry actively collaborates with educators, social workers, NGOs, diocesan youth groups, and student leaders to create meaningful spaces for youth engagement and empowerment.

Rooted in the Jesuit vision of “accompanying the young,” the ministry seeks to help youth become:

  • Reflective and responsible citizens
  • Ethical and compassionate leaders
  • Agents of peace and social transformation
  • Men and women for and with others

Today, the Youth Ministry of the Karnataka Jesuits continues to be a dynamic and transformative apostolate, carrying forward the rich Jesuit legacy of faith, justice, leadership, and holistic human formation while inspiring young people to build a hope-filled future for society.
