Media Education – St. Joseph’s University (SJU), Bengaluru
Media Education at St. Joseph’s University (SJU), Bengaluru is a dynamic Jesuit academic initiative dedicated to developing socially conscious, critically engaged, and professionally competent media practitioners. Rooted in the Jesuit tradition of holistic education, the programme integrates communication theory, media practice, ethics, creativity, and social responsibility to prepare students for meaningful engagement with contemporary media and society.
The history of media education at St. Joseph’s University is closely connected to the long educational legacy of the institution itself. St. Joseph’s College was established in 1882 by the Paris Foreign Mission Fathers and later entrusted to the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) in 1937. Over the decades, the institution became one of Bengaluru’s leading centres of higher education, known for academic excellence, social commitment, and intellectual formation.
Historically, the Jesuits have always recognized the importance of communication and media in shaping culture, public opinion, and social transformation. Inspired by this vision, St. Joseph’s expanded into the field of communication and media studies to address the growing influence of journalism, cinema, digital media, advertising, public relations, and visual culture in contemporary society.
The formal foundation for media education at the institution was laid with the establishment of the Department of Communication and Media Studies in 2008, which later evolved into the School of Communication and Media Studies (SCMS) at St. Joseph’s University. The School was created with the vision of offering interdisciplinary and professionally relevant media education rooted in ethics, creativity, critical inquiry, and social awareness.
Since its inception, the School of Communication and Media Studies has steadily grown into an important centre for media education in Karnataka. Historically, the institution became known for combining media theory with practical training in areas such as:
- Journalism
- Film and video production
- Digital media

- Animation and visual communication
- Photography and multimedia storytelling
- Corporate communication and media research
The department has consistently emphasized critical engagement with media and society, encouraging students to reflect on issues such as democracy, representation, social justice, culture, identity, and the ethical responsibilities of communication professionals.
A significant aspect of the institution’s media education philosophy has been its commitment to experiential learning. Over the years, students have actively engaged in:
- Documentary filmmaking
- Campus journalism and publications
- Theatre and visual storytelling
- Media production projects
- Community media initiatives
- Social awareness campaigns
- Internships with media organizations and creative industries
Rooted in the Jesuit ideal of forming “men and women for and with others,” Media Education at SJU seeks to nurture professionals who are not only technically skilled but also ethically grounded and socially responsible.
The programme promotes:
- Critical thinking and media literacy
- Creativity and innovation
- Ethical communication practices

The transition of St. Joseph’s College into St. Joseph’s University in 2022 marked another important chapter in the growth of communication and media education at the institution. With university status, the School of Communication and Media Studies expanded its academic and research possibilities while continuing the rich Jesuit tradition of excellence, dialogue, and social engagement.
Today, Media Education at St. Joseph’s University, Bengaluru stands as a vibrant centre for communication studies and creative expression, carrying forward the enduring Jesuit legacy of education, ethics, critical inquiry, and transformative social engagement in the rapidly evolving world of media and communication.
