St. Joseph’s Church, Anekal

In 1974, the Archbishop of the Bangalore Archdiocese entrusted the entire Anekal Taluka to the Jesuits of Karnataka, assigning them the pastoral care of the Christian community in the region. At the time, the parish consisted of nearly 75 families and around 300 Catholics, the majority belonging to the Banajiga community.

This mission also aligned with the vision of the Karnataka Jesuit Province under Fr. J. C. Pereira during the 1970s, which encouraged the Jesuits to take up the Anekal region for integral human development. Until then, Jesuits were dispersed across various dioceses such as Bangalore, Mysore, Bellary, and Ooty. The initiative sought to bring them together within the Anekal territory to foster coordinated pastoral and developmental ministry.

Responding to this vision, the Jesuits assumed responsibility for the pastoral care of Catholics throughout Anekal Taluka. Under the leadership of Fr. Francis Guntipilly, the parish witnessed the construction of a magnificent church that became a centre of faith and community life.

Over the years, the Jesuits expanded their mission beyond pastoral ministry to include the service of the poor and marginalized communities in the region. Through programmes focused on welfare, education, and empowerment, they worked towards the holistic development of people from backward and underprivileged sections of society.

The dedicated efforts of the Jesuits, in collaboration with the Canossian Sisters, have greatly contributed to creating social awareness and empowering the people of Anekal Taluka.
